2012
I've been asked how Pagans interpret the whole 2012 Mayan calendar thing. Actually, the same way everyone else does. There's the camp that believe the world will implode, explode, get hit by an asteroid, Mother Nature will wipe up the mess we made, etc. etc.
And there are those that believe that 2012 is a load of crap along the lines of Y2K. I'm in the latter group. The people hollering "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!" are primarily, white North Americans. Ask the people who actually have Mayan blood in their veins and they think the Doomsayers are nuts. The Mayan calendar can't be read as if it were based on our own calendars. It is complex, never mind that it comes from a culture we simply can't understand as we have no real frames of reference.
The Mayan calendar works on a baktun system and according to the real experts on Mayan culture - from what they can tell - in a 20 baktun system we're only in the 13th...so we have a way to go yet.
With that said; there is nothing wrong with setting 2012 as a time for great change. The world desperately requires it from us. We need to change our mindset. We have to change our priorities because thanks to media, they are skewed. And skewed badly.
In a world where there are food surplus; where a place, like Quebec, can throw out millions of gallons of milk because there was too much on the marketplace? It doesn't take a genius to understand how terribly wrong, how terribly criminal an act like this was. Children dying for the lack of food and Quebec throws out millions of gallons of milk...
A world where people are killed for their religion, for their political views, for their desire to be free of dictatorships....yes, a change is very much needed.
The world coming together to help Haiti in its time of need shows that the human spirit has the capacity for great compassion, for courage and bravery. That such a devastating tragedy is the only way for this to come to the fore is very sad. Haiti was dirt poor before the earthquake. Where were all these good Samaritans then?
Some people believe that a great change in human spirit is approaching. People moving away from organized religions to a place where they and their concepts of a higher power are more connected on an individual basis. What a wonderful world this would be without organized religion. Without Christianity or Judaism or Islam. Where killing in the name of some unknown entity ceased to occur. Sure, it is a dream but mine own and I'm allowed.
2012 can be a turning point. We have that kind of power as individuals. We can choose to turn our backs on the "MORE, MORE, MORE" society that we have allowed to be created for us. We can decide to, no longer, be brainwashed into believing a IPOD is the end all, be all of our lives. We can decide to tell high fashion to stick it in their ear, and eat what our bodies require and not fall for the Junkie Look anymore. We can choose to share what we have with our neighbours.
Most of all, we can regain our sense of family and community. Understand that there is nothing, absolutely nothing, on earth more important than the love of family. Stop working stupid hours, farming our kids out to kiddie factories (daycare), stop teaching our children that success is measured by the type of vehicle in the drive or the location of the house.
Success in life is measured by the love that is created within a family unit.
Nobody really cares what your title may be at work; even your corporation won't remember you for your job ten minutes after you've gone.
The meaning of life isn't found in a corner office. The meaning of life is found in your heart, in your soul and in the faces of those who you love and love you. Your bank account wouldn't be worth a thing should a real catastrophe strike. You can't buy your way out of a natural disaster. Mother Nature doesn't accept cash currency.
Let 2012 be your Doomsday. Let it be your Doomsday for bad values, for poor ethics, for your lack of soul. Let it be the apocalypse of the material world.
